Womens Tennis: No. 21 Bulldogs Defeat No. 27 Virginia Tech, 6-3

    San Diego, Calif. - The 21st-ranked Fresno State womens tennis team defeated 27th-ranked Virginia Tech, 6-3, today at the University of San Diego Womens Tennis Classic to take third place in the tournament. The Bulldogs secured the victory by capturing three of the six singles points and all three of the doubles points.

    Senior Dora Djilianova, ranked 10th in the nation, got things started with a 6-2, 6-3, victory over Virginia Techs Majka Serafini at No. 1. Shana Peete delivered the next Bulldog win at the No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Michele Martaus. And at the No. 5, Ewa Grusiecka won her match 6-4,6-3, defeating Daga Mrozsek.

    In doubles, the Bulldogs swept the courts clean with three consecutive wins. The 25th-ranked doubles team made up of Dora Djilianova and Liesl Fichtbauer won their match at No. 1, 8-4, over Virginia Techs Pardo and Serafini. Renee Kops-Jones and Kim Niggemeyer also won their match, 8-4, over Guntinas and Martaus while Terje Pallo and Kandiss Creighton defeated Mrozsek and Khelifi, 9-8, in the closing match of the day.

    The Bulldogs improve to 7-3 on the season and will return to action this Tuesday when they host Purdue at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
