Bulldogs Near Perfect against SJSU

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 16 Fresno State women's tennis team was focused on Thursday during its 4-0 route of San Jose State for the first round of the WAC Tournament in Honolulu, Hawai'i, and appear primed to capture an eighth-straight WAC Championship.
The Bulldogs were in attack mode from beginning to end and only gave up five games to the Spartans.
"W e came really focused, we know its postseason and we need to be at our best," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "We concentrated on playing each point and were ready to win each match."
It was a race to see which two Bulldog doubles teams would complete their match to earn the team point.
Laura Pola and Danon Beatty were the first to finish their match by beating the Spartans' Jennifer Williams and Sanda Hadzisabic, 8-0. No. 1 Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova were next to wrapped up their match with an 8-0 victory over Olivia Marshall and Kerri Kummer.
In singles, No. 16 Melanie Gloria reminded the Spartans she was the defending three-time WAC Player of the Year, with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amber Silverstone.
Shortly after, freshman Pola put the Bulldogs up 3-0 by beating Williams, 6-1, 6-0.
No. 66 Kucerkova clinched the match by knocking off Silvania Dukis, 6-0, 6-0.
In the remaining matches, 25th-ranked Petukhova was ahead of Marshall, 6-0, 2-0 Rowe was beating Kummer, 6-4, and Bruna Paes held a 6-0, 3-0 lead on Hadzisabic.
For the second round, Fresno State will face the winner of Hawai'i and New Mexico State on Friday at 6 p.m. in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
