No. 25 Women's Tennis Defeats Washington State in NCAA First Round Match
May 10, 2002
FRESNO, Calif. - Kim Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim bounced back from a rare loss in doubles to post singles victories in leading Fresno State to a 4-0 victory over Washington State in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament in Berkeley, Calif. The win improves the Bulldogs' record to 17-5 and marks the fourth consecutive season the program has advanced to at least the second round of the tournament. The victory also sends Fresno State into a second round matchup against host California, the tournament's No. 15 seed. The Bulldogs will be seeking revenge for a 6-1 loss the Golden Bears handed them in Berkeley on March 16. Match time is 11 a.m. Fresno State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in winning two of the three doubles matches. However, in a twist from the norm, the 10th-ranked tandem of Niggemeyer and Jardim did not post a victory. The duo suffered just their fifth dual match loss of the season in an 8-4 defeat at the hands of No. 12-ranked Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna. But the Bulldogs' second and third doubles teams picked up the slack to enable them to grab the all-important first point. At No. 2, Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo knocked off WSU's Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez 8-2. The doubles point was clinched when Chantel Wiggins and Courtney Jantz disposed of Nora Gaal and Zorana Roganovic 8-6 at No. 3. In singles, the 42nd-ranked Niggemeyer went to work quickly at No. 1, taking out No. 50-ranked Perkins 7-6 (3), 6-1, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Soon after, Jardim made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Orsi Sallai.
The match was clinched at No. 5, where Wiggins bounced back strongly after dropping the first set to take out Gaal 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.
