Carlotti Wins NCAA Singles First Round Match
May 19, 2003
FRESNO, Calif. - Chloe Carlotti defeated Liina Suurvarik of Illinois State 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Monday morning in Gainesville, Fla.
Carlotti, a 9-16 seed in the tournament, will now play Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania in the second round on Tuesday at 6 a.m. PT. Carlotti and Pirsu played when Fresno State and the Quakers hooked up in a dual match March 10 at the Wathen Tennis Center. Carlotti won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 after leading 5-0 in the third set.
Against Suurvarik, who entered the NCAA's ranked 38th in the nation, Carlotti started a bit slow but found her groove after grinding out the first set. She bolted to a 5-0 lead in the second before closing out Suurvarik 6-2. It was the two-time All-American's 10th win in a row.
"I think it was pretty good," Carlotti said. "At the beginning I made some mistakes, but as the match went on I did better."
Carlotti's quarter of the draw has opened up considerably with the upset loss of the third-seeded Kelly McCain of Duke in the first round. Carlotti would have played McCain in the round of 16, but McCain's loss now means Carlotti could make it to the quarterfinals without playing a seeded player.
A sophomore from Paris, France, Carlotti had to battle high humidity and a five-minute rain delay when she reached match point.
"Chloe really picked up her game as the match went on," head coach Kevin Epley said. "It was a nice first round match, and she'll have to play just as well, if not better, if she's going to beat Pirsu in the second round."
Following her singles match tomorrow morning, Carlotti will team with Lucia Tallo at 9:30 a.m. PT in their first round doubles match. The 19-2 (16-1 dual) duo will play Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones of California, the only team to beat Carlotti/Tallo in the dual match season.
