Gloria Advances to Second Round
May 20, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - No. 18 Melanie Gloria opened her third-straight All-American run by knocking off No. 12 Irina Falconi of Georgia Tech in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Wednesday in College Station, Texas.
"It was great to win today against Irina Falconi, she's a great player," Gloria said. "What helped me today was that I had a good start in the match and did not give her too many free points."
Gloria had faced Falconi twice previous, which both went the Yellow Jacket's way, but that didn't stop Gloria from coming out and setting a tone early on.
"It was a great way for Melanie to start her tournament," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She played solid from start to finish, her focus was impeccable."
Gloria will play the winner of the match between 30th-ranked Reka Zsilinszka of Duke and No. 34 Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee on Thursday at 10 a.m. PT.
The Fresno State women's tennis team went 1-1 in individual action in the first day of the tournament.
Also in action for the Bulldogs, No. 27 Anastasia Petukhova faced 14th-ranked Josipa Bek of Clemson to start the tournament.
The junior from Moscow, Russia, came out fired up and won the first set, 6-3. However Bek gathered herself and won the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0, to advance to the second round.
The NCAA Doubles Tournament will begin tomorrow also. Fresno State's top-ranked duo of Renata Kucerkova and Petukhova will face No. 27 Natasa Vuckovic and Ana Zubori of South Carolina. No. 15 Tinesta Rowe and Gloria will go head-to-head against No. 24 Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose of Northwestern.
