Sept. 29, 2007
FRESNO, Calif. - Another day, another win. Junior Bruna Paes advanced to Sunday's semifinals after defeating Cal's Daron Moore in straight sets at the Cal Invitational. Paes, who upset the blue draw's No. 1 seed and 83rd-ranked Lauren Lui of Northwestern on Friday, will face Bojana Bobusi of Cal on Sunday at 10:45 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
"Bruna played well again today," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "Everyone is getting an opportunity to play some tough matches here this weekend."
Paes has now won six straight matches going back to last weekend's Bulldog Classic and is 7-1 overall to start the season.
Sophomore Vanessa Heroux also played in Saturday's quarterfinals, but lost to Susie Matzenauer of Northwestern, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
In the gold draw's consolation round, juniors Tinesta Rowe and Danon Beatty both got wins. Rowe defeated Santa Clara's Stephanie Galainena in straight sets, while Beatty beat Arizona State's Wendy Pileck, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles play, Beatty and Heroux were defeated in the quarterfinals of the main draw. However, Rowe and senior Jacqueline Haskett won two matches in the consolation draw and will play in the consolation final on Sunday.
Paes and freshman Elizabeth McFeeters also won two matches in the consolation rounds of the blue doubles draw and will play in the final of that bracket on Sunday.
