'Dogs Finish Day One of Cal Nike Invite

BERKELEY, Calif.--- The Fresno State women's tennis team kicked off the 2012 fall season at the Cal Nike Invitational with a full day of tennis on Friday. The 'Dogs won four out of five of their first round matches in singles and split the two opening doubles matches.
In the Gold singles flight round of 32 the Bulldogs were able to notch two close three set victories. Melissa McQueen defeated Nevada's Sophie Stevens in a tough three set match 7-5;4-6;7-6(5). Aishwarya Agrawal topped Santa Clara's Alex Zaniewski 6-4;4-6;7-6(6). Olga Kirpicheva fell 6-0, 6-1 to the tournaments' second seed and No. 22 ITA preseason ranked Anett Schuting of Cal.
The Gold consolation flight got Olga Kirpicheva a singles win over Pacific's Iveta Masarova 3-6;6-4;1-0(4).
In the Gold doubles flight round of 16, top seeded and No. 3 ranked Cal duo Anett Schutting and Annie Goransson defeated Bulldogs Melissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva 8-4. Fresno State's duo of Aishwarya Agrawal and Bianca Modoc lived up to their second seed and No. 46 ranking by topping Pacific's Christina Ferrari and Iveta Masarova 8-3.
Fresno State had two participants in the Blue singles flight winning three out of its four matches. Senior Bianca Modoc advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Davidson's Nicole Koehly 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32 and by dominating in the round of 16 6-0, 6-0 over San Jose State's Julianna Bacelar. Fresno State's Anne Susdorf defeated Nevada's Crlin Konigsfldt due to an injury retirement in the round of 32 and fell to Cal's Kelly Chui 6-0, 7-6(5) in the round of 16.
The Bulldogs return to action in Berkeley all day Saturday and all day Sunday.
