FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Renata Kucerkova continued to play well after winning two singles matches during the qualifying rounds of the Riviera/ITA All-American, Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Kucerkova has won five straight and with one more victory would qualify for the 32-individual main draw.
"Renata played solid in her first match," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "She had a few ups and downs in the second match, but she stayed tough and beat a very good opponent."
Kucerkova began the day with a 6-1, 6-0, defeat of Marshall's Lynzee Keever. In her second match of the day, Kucerkova beat 38th-ranked Hannah Grady of Long Beach State in straight sets. Kucerkova won the first set 7-5. Then in the second, she trailed Grady 5-2 before winning five consecutive games to win 7-5.
In five matches, Kucerkova has yet to drop a set.
Kucerkova will battle Colorado's Monica Melewski at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Eight women from the qualifying rounds will advance to the main draw which features 24 women who have already qualified. Sophomore Melanie Gloria, ranked 19th in the country, automatically qualified for the main draw.
Gloria and Kucerkova lost in the doubles qualifying bracket 9-8 (7) to Lubinsky and Mechem of Texas A&M.
