FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Melanie Gloria is on a quest to get back to the All-American final. On Thursday, the sensation from Montreal, Canada, got started with a straight-set victory over No. 19 Vanja Corovic of Texas in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's prestigious All-American in Los Angeles.

It was Gloria's first match of the year. Last year, Gloria opened the season with a run at the All-American title, losing only to Cal's Susie Babos in the third-set tiebreaker of the final. Gloria is ranked No. 3 in the country and comes into the tournament as the third seed.

Gloria is now the highest seed remaining in the tournament after top seeds Megan Falcon (No. 1) of LSU and Lindsey Nelson (No. 2) of USC fell in the first round.

Gloria faces UCLA's Riza Zalameda in the round of 16 on Friday.

Gloria and junior Tinesta Rowe fell in the first round of the doubles draw. The Bulldog tandem battled to a tough 9-8 (4) loss to USC's Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu.

Meanwhile, sophomores Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova have won three straight matches in the consolation draw of the qualifying tournament. The duo beat Broosova and Zemenova of Baylor 8-6.
