Bulldog Doubles Advance to Semifinals

MORAGA, Calif. ---The Fresno State women’s tennis team won all four double matches on day one of the St. Mary’s Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif. on Friday.
“We came out strong, I am really proud of how we showed them what Fresno State is all about,” said Fresno State head coach Ryan Stotland. “We had a great attitude today and we believed in ourselves, which really showed in our results. We got some great wins today.”
The Bulldogs had a solid start, going 7-for-8 in doubles and singles play on day one of the invitational. Fresno State won all four of its doubles matches and had three singles victories.
Junior Aishwarya Agrawal and freshman Claire Yang had two doubles victories on day one. The two paired to defeat Flores and Frampton of St. Mary’s (8-6) as well as Estlander and Chui of California (8-5). Junior Anne Susdorf and sophomore Anneka Watts also won both of their doubles matches, with victories over Sacramento’s Nguyen and Knoebl, and Santa Clara’s Cooke and Rouvillois (8-4).
Both doubles teams will compete in the semifinals round Saturday morning.
In singles play Agrawal defeated California’s Kelly Chui (6-4, 6-2), Watts was victorious over Katy Krauel of Portalnd (6-0, 6-1) and Yang won her match in straight sets over Samantha Martino of UC Davis (7-5, 6-2). Susdorf dropped her singles match to Thyra Taune of San Francisco (6-0, 6-1).
Agrawal, Watts and Yang will all advance to the singles round of 16 on Saturday afternoon.
“I am looking forward to tomorrow with the semifinals and three of the girls in the round of 16,” added Stotland. “We are making strides, which is a great thing to see. I am excited to see how we do tomorrow.”
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow morning with doubles play starting at 9 a.m., singles matches will follow afterwards.
