Gloria and Rowe Advance at National Indoor Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - Juniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe started the 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships with a tough 8-6 victory, Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. The 11th-ranked Fresno State duo beat No. 13 Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson of LSU in the round of 16, winning their ninth-straight match.
Gloria and Rowe, winners of the Northwest Regional doubles title, face No. 51 Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Gloria opened the singles draw with a straight-set win over Northwestern's Maria Mosolova. Gloria improved to 5-2 after the victory and will battle Baylor's Taylor Ormond in the round of 16 on Friday.
"In doubles, Melanie and Tinesta were very aggressive," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "In singles, Melanie won a tough match and finished strong in the tiebreaker."
The National Indoor Championships are the second of three major championships that occur during the college tennis season.
The rest of the Bulldogs will compete at the highly-competitive Duals In The Desert Invitational beginning Friday in Palm Springs, Calif. Sophomores Reanata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova will compete in the Flight 1 singles and doubles draws.
The tournament features players from Baylor, Clemson, Fresno State, Northwestern, Texas, UCLA and USC.
