FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State women's tennis team shined on Day 1 of the Bulldog Classic as the 'Dogs went 8-1 Friday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

"I am really proud of the girls," said first year head coach Ryan Stotland. " As a group we are getting a lot better everyday which is our goal. We are starting to see success and we are excited to see where it takes us for the rest of the tournament."

The morning got off to a slow start due to the heavy fog that was in the Fresno area this morning, delaying the start of play approximately two hours. However, once play started Fresno State remained almost perfect for the day with wins in eight out of nine matches.

The morning began with doubles during which the 'Dogs picked up half of their wins for the day. Seniors Bianca Modoc and Melissa McQueen teamed to win 8-5, while the duo of Aishwarya Agrawal and Olga Kirpicheva rolled 8-3. Sophomore Anne Susdorf teamed up with a fellow Mountain West Conference player in Nevada's Rymma Maslova. The pair notched two wins on the day with an 9-7 victory in the round of 32 and an 8-6 win the round of 16.

There will be a clash of the 'Dogs tomorrow morning when Agrawal and Kirpicheva meet Susdorf and Maslova in the quarterfinals.

In singles play, Modoc and McQueen each picked up victories in the Flight A Singles. Modoc fought tough in a three set victory over Montana's Laurence Pelchat to prevail 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. McQueen won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 over Cal Poly's Kathryn Webb.

In the Flight B Singles, Susdorf breezed through her quarterfinal winning 6-2, 6-1 and advanced to the semi-final round tomorrow.

In the Flight A Consolation Singles, Olga Kirpicheva only dropped a single game, topping her opponent 6-1, 6-0.

The 'Dogs will head out to Sierra Sport & Racquet Club for tomorrow's action due to the Fresno State home football game against Hawai'i. The matches will begin at 8:30 a.m.
