Petukhova Finishes Fall With Quarterfinal Run

    FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Anastasia Petukhova finished the fall portion of the season with a run to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Friday in New Haven, Conn.

    The 22nd-ranked Petukhova began the day with an upset of No. 17 Maria Sanchez of USC. The Trojan won the first set, 3-6, but Petukhova took the next two sets, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the quarterfinals. In her second match of the day, she met Washington's 58th-ranked Denise Dy, with the Husky picking up a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.

    "Anastasia started really well, but Dy came back really strong," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She (Dy) is one of the hottest players right now on the circuit. She won the ITA Northwest Regional."

    The victory over Sanchez was Petukhova's fifth win of the season over a ranked opponent.

    "She had a very good fall," Thibodeau said about his senior. "We are looking to the spring and Anastasia to lead our team."

    The Bulldogs will next be in action on Jan. 15 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
