'Dogs Kickoff 2014
The No. 56 Fresno State women's tennis team is set to kick off its 2014 spring season in Berkeley, Calif. at the California Winter Invite which begins on Friday, Jan. 17. The three day tournament will run all weekend and will feature players from California, St. Mary's and Cal Poly. This tournament begins a long road trip for the 'Dogs who will be on the road for the next month as they travel to three different states to begin their spring semester. This weekend will be the last tournament before Fresno State begins dual match play.
About the Competition
The Bulldogs will face California, St. Mary's and Cal Poly in doubles and singles action over the weekend. Like Fresno State, California and Saint Mary's earned spots in the ITA Top 75 in the preseason poll. California is the highest ranked team the Bulldogs will face this season, coming in at a tie for fifth. The Bears also had four players earn singles rankings as well as two doubles pairs. Saint Mary's was ranked at No. 37 in the preseason poll while senior Jenny Jullien earned a singles ranking of No. 7.
On the Road
The California Winter Invite begins a long road trip for the 'Dogs who will play on the road for over a month in California, South Carolina, Kansas and Washington. After the Winter Invite, Fresno State will travel to Clemson, S.C. for ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Bulldogs then return to California to face Sacramento State and St. Mary's before heading to Kansas and Washington to conclude their nine-match road trip.
After opening the season with nine dual road matches, the Bulldogs will host No. 67 Santa Clara for their home opener on Friday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Fresno State will then hit the courts two days later to face Boise State for their first MW match of the year at 10 a.m.
Stotland Enters Second Season
Head coach Ryan Stotlandenters his second season at the helm of the Fresno State women's tennis program. In his first year at the reigns, Stotland led the Bulldogs to a third place finish in their first year in the Mountain West with a 7-3 record. Stotland also guided the 'Dogs to their highest ITA ranking of No. 52, which came on Feb. 12, 2013, and also had two doubles pairs earn ITA rankings throughout the year. Under Stotland's leadership three Bulldogs earned MW Player of the Week in 2013.
After a strong fall season, Fresno State earned a spot in the Top 75 at No. 56 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's first rankings of the 2014 dual match tennis season. The Bulldogs also earned singles and doubles ranking in the initial polls. Sophomore Sophie Watts earned an ITA singles ranking of No. 104, while Aishwarya Agrawal and Claire Yangpaired to earn an ITA doubles ranking of No. 41. Watts was also ranked at No. 15 in the ITA Northwest Region rankings while Agrawal and Yang have a doubles ranking of No. 7 in the region.
