FRESNO, Calif. --- The No. 52 Fresno State women's tennis team will wrap up its month long road trip this weekend in Arizona as the Bulldogs face the Univ. of Arizona on Friday at 12:30 p.m. PT and Arizona State Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
The No. 33 Wildcats (4-3) enter the match coming off two consecutive losses to Texas Tech and San Diego. The No. 29 Sun Devils (3-1) jumped into the Top-30 for the first time this year after pushing No. 9 Miami to the brink in the second round of the ITA tournament, but ultimately fell 4-3 for their first loss of the year.
'Dogs Steadily Climbing
After a week of no new rankings due to the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship, this week's ITA rankings found the 'Dogs moving up four spots, just two spots shy of cracking the top 50. Each week Fresno State has slowly inched ahead in the rankings as they began the year at No. 60.
The 'Dogs doubles duo of Bianca Modoc and Aishwarya Agrawal have played their way in to the ITA doubles rankings at No. 53 after defeating USC's No. 13-ranked duo of DeSimone/Scandalis.
First Student-Athlete of the Week
Beat By the Best
The women's tennis team recorded their first Sysco Student-Athlete of the Week, which is given to the best performance by a Bulldog in the previous week, and Mountain West Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 11.
Freshman Rana Sherif Ahmed went a perfect 4-0 over the weekend in the `Dogs victories over San Francisco and Santa Clara. In doubles, Ahmed teamed with senior Melissa McQueen as the pair won both matches convincingly, 8-2 against USF and 8-4 versus Santa Clara. Ahmed recorded her first career wins in singles in two tough three-set matches at the No. 2 spot. Against the Dons she bounced back from dropping the first set and went on to win 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8), while on Sunday against the Broncos, she clinched the deciding point in Fresno State's 4-3 come from behind win with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Santa Clara's Kelly Lamble.
So far this season, the 'Dogs are 4-2 in dual matches. Their only losses have come against teams that are ranked in the top five of the ITA rankings. One of the losses was to No. 2 UCLA who just finished as the runner-ups in the ITA National Women's Indoor Championship
The Bulldogs home opener will come on Friday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. against the Hornets of Sacramento State. Fresno State will hit the courts a day later to face UC Davis at 10 a.m.
