FRESNO, Calif. ---After nearly a month on the road, the No. 53 Fresno State women's tennis team will have their home opener this weekend at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The 'Dogs will first host No. 62 Sacramento State on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m., then will return to action on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. as they square off against UC Davis.
About the Competition
The nationally-ranked Hornets enter Friday's match coming off of a narrow 4-3 loss to UC Davis. Sac State is 1-4 on the season with three of the losses coming against team ranked in the ITA top 35. The 'Dogs and Hornets last met a season ago in Sacramento during which the Bulldogs fell 4-3 on the road.
The Aggies travel to Fresno after three straight 4-3 matches, coming out victorious in two. UC Davis most recently dropped a 4-3 decision to the USF squad the 'Dogs topped 6-1 two weekends ago. Last season the squads met in Davis, with the 'Dogs coming out with the 5-2 victory.
Seniors Leading The Way
Melissa McQueen and Bianca Modoc lead the 'Dogs this season in singles. Both seniors have four dual match singles wins apiece with McQueen playing mostly at the third spot and Modoc at the fifth spot. Melissa and Bianca have also won three out of their last four singles matches.
Finding the Perfect Fit
Coach Stotland has been given the difficult task of finding the perfect lineup as his team runs very deep. Eight different 'Dogs have seen action in both singles and doubles, with six of the eight playing at multiple positions in the singles lineup. Coach Stotland has described this situation as `difficult, but a very good problem to have'.
The 'Dogs doubles duo of Bianca Modoc and Aishwarya Agrawal have played their way in to the ITA doubles rankings at No. 53 after defeating USC's No. 13-ranked duo of DeSimone/Scandalis.
Beat By the Best
So far this season, the 'Dogs have a split record as they are 4-4 in dual matches. Their only losses have come against teams that are ranked in the top 33 of the ITA rankings and have all occurred on the road. Two of the losses came against two of the top four teams in the country including a loss to No. 2 UCLA who just finished as the runner-ups in the ITA National Women's Indoor Championship
