COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Sophomore Sophie Watts has been named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for competition played March 19-25, as announced by the conference Wednesday. This is her first career MW weekly accolade and second for the Bulldogs this season.
Watts led Fresno State to a huge 6-1 upset victory over No. 58 Denver last week, winning both her singles and doubles matches for the Bulldogs to help them remain undefeated (5-0) at home this season while extending their win streak to four.
Watts helped win the doubles point for the 'Dogs, defeating Kathryn Hughes and Sonja Radosevic (8-4) on court one alongside teammate and twin sister Anneka Watts. The Watts twins are now 11-1 in doubles dual play this spring, having moved all the way up the ladder from the No. 3 position to the top spot.
The Hitchin, England native then carried her momentum into singles, winning her point over Maureen Slattery of Denver in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) at the one slate. Sophie Watts is 8-8 in singles dual play this season at the No. 1 spot and is currently ranked at No. 70 in the ITA.
Having won seven of its last eight dual matches played, Fresno State moved back into the ITA rankings this week at No. 74.
The Bulldogs (8-8, 1-0 MW) continue their five-match home stand when they host a San Diego State and UNLV this weekend for a pair of MW dual matches.
