Festival of Tennis Action On Tap This Weekend
April 1, 2004
FRESNO, Calif. - Four tennis matches, a fundraising exhibition event and clinics are all on tap in Fresno this weekend, the busiest and most action packed of the regular season for the Bulldogs and area tennis fans.
The fun gets underway Friday at 1 p.m. when the 10th-ranked Fresno State women's team (14-2) takes on Idaho at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs have won eight consecutive matches and appear in the top 10 for just the third time in program history. They are 6-0 at home in 2004 and 62-7 since the opening of the Wathen Center in 1998.
The match with Idaho was originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. but has been moved back to a 1 p.m. start.
On Friday at 6 p.m. at Sierra Sport and Racquet Club, the No. 35-ranked Fresno State men (9-6) will host the British University National Team in an exhibition fundraiser. Cost to attend the event is $25 per person and includes dinner, drinks, raffle prizes and the chance to watch the Bulldogs square off with a talented British squad.
Tickets for the evening may be purchased at Sierra Sport and Racquet Club, located on Alluvial in between Van Ness and Marks. During the men's match, the women's team will be on hand to conduct a kids' clinic.
On Saturday, the women return to the court for a contest against No. 60 Cal Poly at 1 p.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center. Following the match, the women's team will conduct another clinic, which is free and open to high school aged individuals.
The weekend wraps up on Sunday, when the men's team returns to action following an 18-day period of inactivity with a doubleheader at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs host UC San Diego at 9 a.m. then come back later that day at 2 p.m. for a match against UC Davis.
The men are 7-0 at home this year and have won 20 of their last 21 at the Wathen Center.
Following this weekend, the women play only one more match at home this season while the men have two more.
