COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Sophomore Anneka Watts has been named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for competition played March 26-April 1, as announced by the conference Wednesday. This is her first career MW weekly accolade and third for the Bulldogs this season.
Winning all four of her matches, Anneka Watts led Fresno State to two huge conference wins over San Diego State and UNLV last weekend, helping the Bulldogs finish the season undefeated (7-0) at home.
She took both her doubles matches at the top spot to help clinch the crucial doubles point for the 'Dogs in both duals. Teamed up with twin sister Sophie Watts at No. 1 doubles, they turned back Somoracz and Hailey Johnson of San Diego State 8-2, and then topped UNLV's Lucia Batta and Santa Shumilina 8-4. The Watts twins have won four straight doubles matches and are 13-1 in dual play this season.
Anneka Watts also came from behind from a set down to win both of her singles points at the No. 5 slot, extending her win streak to six. She topped San Diego State's Dora Somoracz, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 and UNLV's Kamelia Dimitrova, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Having won six-straight matches and nine of its last 10 dual matches played, Fresno State moved up two spots in the ITA rankings this week to No. 72.
The Bulldogs improve to 10-8, 3-0 MW and are set to close regular season with three road duals at San Jose State (April 11), Nevada (April 13) and Cal Poly (April 18). Fresno State then hosts the 2014 Mountain West tournament at Sierra Sport and Racquet Club April 23-27.
