FRESNO, Calif. - The defending eight-time WAC Champion Fresno State opens the first round of the WAC Women's Tennis Championships against New Mexico State on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Fresno State went 5-5 in the month of April, which included a 5-3 record against WAC foes. The mark earned the Bulldogs the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament.
Kucerkova in particular has been hot in singles action to end the season. Since beating No. 29 Marta Lesniak of SMU, Kucerkova has gone 6-2, including three wins against ranked opponents in that time.
During WAC play, the Bulldogs have also seen the emergence of Melissa McQueen. The freshman from Whitby, Canada, went a perfect 8-0 in singles action against WAC foes this spring. She and fellow freshman Bianca Modoc have also given Fresno State some depth in the doubles lineup.
New Mexico State comes into the contest with an 11-13 record overall. The Aggies are the No. 6 seed after going 4-4 in WAC play.
In the head-to-head this year with the Bulldogs, the Aggies picked up a 4-3 victory in Las Cruces, N.M.
The winner of the match will advance to the WAC semifinals to face the No. 2 seed Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday at 11 a.m. The WAC Championship match will be on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center and the winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
