2009-10 Women's Tennis Schedule

FRESNO, Calif. -- The "Anybody, Anytime, Anywhere" motto extends beyond the football field as the Fresno State women's tennis 2009-10 schedule will include at least 13 matches against teams that finished in the 2009 ITA Tennis Top 45 Final Rankings.

The Bulldogs will also host some of the premier teams in the country and start the dual season by hosting the qualifying rounds of the National Team Indoors. Fresno State will welcome the Big Ten's Ohio State for the opening qualifying round of National Team Indoors on Jan. 30. Depending on the results of the first round matches, the Bulldogs will play either the ACC's Virginia or Florida State the following day.

"It is strong schedule with many tough road matches, but we are happy to host the National Team Indoors qualification rounds with nationally recognized teams like Ohio State, Florida State and Virginia coming to Fresno," the Bulldogs head coach Simon Thiboodeau said.

If Fresno State wins both of its qualifying matches, it will earn an invite to the National Team Indoors Sweet 16 on February 12-15 in Madison, Wis., and chance to strengthen its schedule against some of the top teams in college tennis.

2009 Conference-USA Champion Southern Methodist visits the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on March 27. In 2008-09, the Mustangs went 28-3, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 23.

The 'Dogs will take a tour of the Pacific-10, with four matches against the conference. Arizona State will host Fresno State on Feb. 27. On March 10 the Bulldogs visit defending Pac-10 Champion USC and the following day face the Trojans' cross-town rival UCLA, who finished the 2008-09 season ranked No. 12. Two months later, the Bulldogs go to Berkeley, Calif., to meet 2009 National Championship finalist California on April 15.

Other key non-conference road matches on the Dogs' schedule include UNLV on Feb. 19, BYU on March 6, Pepperdine on March 13 and Sacramento State on March 26. The Bulldogs also face Texas A&M on March 20, Texas on March 26 and South Carolina on March 7 on neutral courts.

During the fall, Fresno State will participate in six tournaments, including the ITA All-American from Oct. 3-11. Seniors Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova will have a chance to defend their 2008 ITA National Indoors Doubles Championship at the ITA National Indoor Championships in New Haven, Conn., on Nov. 5-8. Fresno State will also host the Bulldog Classic on Nov. 13-15.

Other fall tournaments include the Berkeley Nike Invitational on Oct. 2-4, the Saint Mary's College Invitational on Oct. 9-11 and the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Oct. 23-26.

Fresno State will host the WAC Tournament on April 30-May 2, after playing all eight WAC regular season matches away from the Wathen Tennis Center.

"It will be very exciting, because this is the first time in a while that we will be playing for the WAC Championship in front of our fans," Thibodeau added.

The Bulldogs have won the last eight WAC Championships and are coming off their fourth-straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
