FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State women's tennis team starts its fall campaign this weekend at the Cal Nike Invitational, Sept. 27-29. Fellow Bulldog teammate Rana Sherif Ahmed will be competing at the ITA Women's All-American Championships, which starts on Sept. 28.
The Cal Nike Invitational will take place all day Friday through Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkley, Calif. Five Bulldogs including- Claire Yang, Anne Susdorf, Sofya Malysheva, Sophie Watts, and Anneka Watts- will be competing in singles and doubles.
Returning as sophomores, the Watts twins will be pairing up in doubles, while newcomer Yang will be competing with Susdorf. Malysheva will be competing in doubles action with Nevada's Monika Magusiak.
"I'm excited to see how we do this weekend, we have had the best practices that I've seen in a long time," said Fresno Stat head coach Ryan Stotland. "This group is one of the hardest working groups that I think I will ever have. I'm excited to see all of this hard work pay off and get to go out there and show what we can do."
Fresno State is one of 16 teams participating in the event. In addition to the 'Dogs, 80-plus players will represent Cal, Armstrong Atlantic State, BYU, UC Davis, Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Jose State, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, and USC.
While the Bulldogs compete in Cal Nike Invite, fellow teammate Sherif Ahmed will be participating in the ITA Women's All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. The Pre-Qualifying Rounds, which are hosted by UCLA, will be held at the Sycamore Tennis Courts and Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Sherif Ahmed will be competing with 140 of the top players in the country. The 2013 Mountain West Freshman of the Year was the only Bulldog to qualify for the 2013 All-American tournament.
"It is a big honor for Rana to attend the All-American tournament," added Stotland.
The Bulldogs will compete in four more tournaments this fall. The first chance for the Red Wave to see the 'Dogs in action will be Nov. 1-3 when Fresno State hosts the Bulldog Classic at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
