Bulldogs Conclude Play at the Cal Nike Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - Danon Beatty finished the Cal Nike Invitational with a tough match against Marion Ravelojaona of Cal. Abigail Oliver played in the consolation semifinals of the gold bracket, and Laura Pola was featured in the consolation semifinals of the blue bracket.
Beatty played a tough match against Ravelojaona, jumping out to a fast start and taking the first set. Ravelojaona battled back to win the match 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Ravelojaona went on to win the blue-flight championship.
"Danon competed well today," Head Coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She did a lot of things well, and it was a very positive tournament for her."
Olivier and Pola, both playing in their first collegiate tournament as Bulldogs, each won the consolation finals of their respective brackets.
Olivier started the day in the consolation semis of the gold-flight against Tijana Koprivica of Minnesota. She prevailed in a hard fought match, coming away with a victory with set scores of 3-6, 6-0, 10-8.
In the finals of the gold-flight consolation bracket Olivier had continued success against Sarah Landsman of Arizona. After dropping the first set, Olivier battles back to take the match 1-6, 7-5, 11-9. Olivier completed her first tournament with a 4-1 record in singles.
Pola matched Olivier's success in the blue-flight consolation bracket. Pola picked up a victory in the semifinals against Deborah Armstrong of Long Beach State 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. She then went on to win her fourth straight match of the tournament, a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-3 over Aileen Tsan of Sacramento State. Like Olivier, Pola also finished her first tournament with a 4-1 record in singles.
"This was a very positive weekend, we were able to play a lot of matches and that was the main reason we came to the tournament," said Thibodeau. "I'm proud of our freshman who each won four out of five matches, they now have some experience for future matches."
Melanie Gloria and Anastasia Petukhova did not compete Sunday, but will be back in action Oct. 2 in the ITA All-American Championships. Gloria is ranked No. 12 in singles, and Petukhova is No. 16.
Gloria will also team up with Tinesta Rowe in the main draw of the doubles tournament; while Petukhova will be compete with her doubles teammate, Renata Kucerkova. Gloria/Rowe earned a No. 1 national doubles ranking, while Petukhova/Kucerkova are No. 8.
