BOULDER, Colo. - The Fresno State volleyball team overcame a slow start to sweep Cornell (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) in its first game of the Omni Hotels Colorado Tournament hosted by University of Colorado.
"Wins are wins and wins are good," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "It wasn't a pretty win. We focused too much on our own errors and didn't stay focused on our game plan. We struggled with our vision and making easy plays easy. We need to turn it around and keep our minds on the right stuff in the next match."
The Bulldogs (3-1, 0-0 MW) won their second-straight match sweeping the opponents 3-0. Last weekend, the `Dogs ended with a 3-0 win over Idaho State. Fresno State has won six consecutive sets and only lost a total of 5-of-14 sets so far in 2012.
Redshirt junior Marissa Brand logged the first double-double of the season for the `Dogs after recording 13 kills and 13 digs. The outside hitter has a total of 18th double-doubles in her career.
"If you ask Marissa, she would've thought she struggled in that match," Netherby-Sewell said. "She always comes through for us. She took a little time warming into to it today, but she dug a lot of balls for us and she dug with control. She served some passers off the court and she passed pretty well. She did a lot of the little things well."
Junior Megann Callahan hit a team-high .545 on the right side converting 7-of-11 attacking attempts. Sophomore Maci Murdock also hit .500 with eight kills in 14 attempts.
The first set stayed close and was tied at 15-15. The `Dogs went on 6-0 run behind the serving of senior Barbara Alcantara to take a 21-16 lead in the first set.
Murdock recorded her first kill of the match to earn set-point for the Bulldogs and Fresno State won set one 25-17.
A kill from Molly Pearson gave the `Dogs a three-point lead in the second set. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 19-13 over Cornell with a service ace from Marissa Brand.
The Bulldogs won the second set, 25-18, over the Big Red.
Callahan opened the third set with a kill in the middle of court. The Bulldogs started the set with a 6-1 run. The `Dogs increased their lead, 13-7, over the Big Red.
Cornell came back within two points of the Bulldogs midway through the third set. Another kill from Callahan and a block from Pearson gave the `Dogs a 22-21 leads late in the third set.
The Bulldogs won the match-point with Korrin Wild's eighth kill of the match winning the third set, 25-22.
The Bulldogs continue tournament play against Northern Arizona University at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.
