Bulldogs Sweep UC Davis for First Win of Season

FRESNO, Calif. - With a season-high .296 hitting percentage, the Fresno State volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a sweep of UC Davis, 3-0. The game scores were 35-33, 30-27 and 30-24.
The Bulldogs (1-4), progressively hit a higher percentage in each game as they hit .224 in game one, a season-high for one game .302 in game two, and then topped that with an impressive .375 in game three.
"We played hard and loose tonight," said head coach Ruben Nieves. "That is how I could tell we were ready to win."
Freshman Kasey Van Grouw had 46 assists to lead FS and also recorded 19 digs to record her second-straight double-double of her collegiate career.
Game one was the highest-scored game of the season for Fresno State at 35-33. The Bulldogs won that game with the 35th point coming off a block by Van Grouw and fellow freshman Lauren Berger.
In game two, Fresno State was down at 26-23 when Leonardo served for four-straight points and the Bulldogs took the 2-0 lead into the locker room. Game three was much the same for the Bulldogs as they only trailed twice and took the lead for good at 16-15.
The Bulldogs continue the opening homestand with St. Mary's Sunday (Sept. 2) at 2 p.m. in the Save Mart Center.
"St Mary's is tough on paper, but I think we are ready for the challenge," said Nieves.
