FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team opened the second day of the Fresno State Classic with a 3-0 sweep of UC Davis. The Bulldogs (5-3, 0-0 MW) won three close sets (25-23, 25-23, 26-24) to improve to 1-1 in the tournament.
The Bulldogs controlled the first set until UC Davis came from behind to even the set 17-17. Behind the serving of freshman Zana Bowens, the `Dogs went on a short 3-0 run to regain the lead. On the set point, Murdock and Wild came up with the block for a point and the Bulldogs won the first set 25-23.
Fresno State's Megan Callahan opened the second set with a kill after tipping the ball over the Aggies' front row. The Bulldogs came back from a four-point deficit to tie the second set 8-8. Bowens recorded her second service ace of the match as the `Dogs once again tied up the set 17-17.
The Bulldogs trailed most of the second set, but fought back and after back-to-back kills from Callahan, the `Dogs won set two 25-23. After two sets, Callahan was hitting .750 with nine kills.
Fresno State headed into the locker room at intermission with a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the Bulldogs jumped ahead with a 6-1 run. Like the first two, the third set remained evenly matched with both teams looking to gain momentum and take a lead. Brand and Murdock with an assisted block gave the `Dogs match point. Fresno State won the final set 26-24.
Fresno State recorded six service aces against UC Davis. Bowens and Barbara Alcantara each recorded a team-best two aces.
For the third match in a row, Marissa Brand recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. She has four double-doubles on the season. Callahan finished the match hitting .368 with 10 kills.
The Bulldogs face Utah Valley at 7 p.m. Saturday night to conclude the Fresno State Classic.
