Fresno, Calif. - After playing some tough competition in the beginning of the year the Bulldogs get back on the winning track defeating UC Davis in five (30-28,33-31,15-30,28-30,17-15). Fresno State battled and would not give up as it was a barn burner at the Save Mart Center. The Aggies started fresh this year with head coach Steve Walker and have come off to a rough start achieving one win this season against Montana in the Molten Classsic 3-0.
After tonight Fresno State head coach Ruben Nieves is watching his team come together and feels it was a great win for his squad. Fresno State felt it needed to get the win tonight to carry momentum into conference play next week. The Bulldogs had a tremendous amount of contribution from all members on the team.
UC Davis came to play as they jumped out ahead in most of the contests. In game one the Aggies jumped out to a 15-10 lead on a Fr. OH Britt Erickson kill who tallied 16 kills and 24 digs. Fresno State answered back cutting the lead to one at 19-20 on a Fr. OH Lacey Gera kill who led the Bulldogs with 24. The Bulldogs took the lead at 25-24 with a kill by Sr. OH Alison Pitton who recorded a double-double having 15 kills and 30 digs. Fresno State won game one 30-28. The second game was close as the two teams traded points. The biggest lead in game two was four at 15-11 on an attack error by Sr. OH Rachel Keener. The Bulldogs stuck with it and won game two in a close 33-31 win.
The Aggies found a rhythm in game three and four. So. OH Chantal Paschetta led the Aggies in game three with five kills and finished the night with 18. Top leaders for the Aggies were Sr. OH Nicole Read who tallied 21 kills and added 20 digs. Jr. S Katelyn Astruc led the Aggies with 64 assists. The Bulldogs Cori Hayes had a great match as she recorded 14 kills. Both teams were very competitive and well matched but the Aggies pulled it out in game four winning 30-28.
Game five was a barn burner as the Aggies biggest lead was three at 6-3. Jr. OH Angela Wiggins answered with a service ace which gave the Bulldogs momentum. Wiggins finished the night with five kills which were some of the most crucial points for Fresno State. The Bulldogs led 12-11 on a Fr. OH Karlie Houston kill but the Aggies went on a 2-0 run with kills by Paschetta and Erickson making it 13-12. The Aggies looked as if they were going to win the match leading 15-14 with a kill from Read. The Bulldogs barked back with Wiggins nailing a shot from a pass by Jr. S Tiffany Hess who recorded 27 assists. Sr. libero Cheryl Selenak played unbelievable for the Bulldogs and dug some of the biggest points leading the pack with 32. Selenak gave the Bulldogs a 16-15 lead on a service ace. The rest was history after a beautiful pass from Hess setting up Wiggins for the kill giving Fresno State the win 17-15.
Next week Fresno State will play its first conference season match on the road Thu., Sept. 21 against Utah State. The Bulldogs also will play Sat., Sept. 23 vs. No. 12 Hawaii.
