COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Fresno State volleyball team lost to Air Force (23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25) on the road, 3-1. The Bulldogs (8-6, 1-1 MW) lost a close opening set and won the second tying the match, but the Falcons came out of the intermission winning two-straight sets for the win.
"Air Force played very well tonight," said head coach Netherby-Sewell. "We couldn't find our serve or defensive rhythm. We are happy to be coming home after a long, tough road trip. We're coming back with vengeance in the Save Mart Center."
Outside hitter Marissa Brand and setter Barbara Alcantara recorded double-doubles against the Falcons. Brand finished the night with 19 kills and 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the year, while Alcantara recorded 50 assists and 11 digs for her fifth double-double.
The Bulldogs trailed the Falcons for the first half of the opening set, but Megan Callahan recorded a kill from the right side evening the score 15-15. The `Dogs and Air Force traded points back and forth, while both looking to make a run. Air Force took the lead and the first set 25-23 after ending with a 5-3 run.
Brand led the Bulldogs in the first set with six kills and six digs. Middle blocker Maci Murdock tallied two blocks in the opening set.
In the second set, Fresno State pulled ahead with a 9-4 lead to start. The Bulldogs offense continued to attack from the outside increasing their lead to 16-9. A combo block from Korrin Wild and Lauren Albertson gave the `Dogs a nine-point advantage.
Albertson and Murdock led the team with three blocks each. Murdock came up with the kill in the middle of the net to secure the win 25-18 in the second set.
The Bulldogs head to intermission with the match tied 1-1. After two sets, Brand recorded 10 kills hitting .375 in the first two sets, while Murdock added by hitting .538 with eight kills and three blocks.
Fresno State fell behind Air Force to start the third set trailing by five points. The Falcons maintained their lead slowing the `Dogs offense and won the third set 25-19 taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Falcons opened the fourth set with a 4-0 run, which Brand ended with a kill down the line. Air Force increased its lead to 16-11 after a tip over the Bulldog blockers. Air Force won the fourth set 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
Murdock hit a team-high .348 with 11 kills in 23 attempts. Libero Christina Lee averaged 3.7 digs per set and had a total of 15 on the night.
The Bulldogs return to the Save Mart Center on Tuesday, Sept. 25 to face cross town foe Fresno Pacific.
