BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball stepped out of conference action and defeated CSU Bakersfield in four sets (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) on the road Thursday to improve to 14-8 on the season.
"We love getting wins on the road," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We passed we and our offense was dominant. Our blocking finally improved tonight. Hopefully we can continue to strengthen there to slow som big hitters in the MW. Our serving was strong tonight, which earned us some runs. We are looking to do the same against New Mexico."
Junior Korrin Wild led the offense with 24 kills hitting .444. She also added two service aces bring her league-high total to 37 on the season. Wild also added seven digs and two assisted blocks.
"I was really impressed with Korrin's power, steadfastness, and variety," said Netherby-Sewell. "She's a terminator."
Middle blocker Maci Murdock tallied 11 kills and hit a team best .450. The sophomore also led the team with six assisted blocks. Outside hitter Marissa Brand was a kill shy of her 12th double-double with nine kills and a match-high 15 digs.
The Bulldogs cruised to a 2-0 lead heading into intermission after winning the first sets. Fresno State jumped ahead to a 10-5 lead in the opening set. CSUB narrowed the `Dogs lead to two before the Bulldogs pulled ahead with a 7-2 run to end set one. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-19 and Wild led with six kills hitting .357.
The Roadrunners began the second set with 4-0 run to take an early lead, but the Bulldogs halted CSUB's momentum and went on a 5-0 run for the lead. The set was tied 7-7 and an ace from Brand started a 6-0 run by Fresno State. The Bulldogs ended the set with a 5-2 run winning 25-18. Wild hit .667 with seven kills in the second set.
The Roadrunners came out of the break winning a close third set 25-23. CSUB jumped out to a 5-2 lead to open the third set. The Bulldogs trailed the Roadrunners by one point halfway through set, but a 5-1 run from CSU Bakersfield increased its lead 16-12. The Bulldogs almost overcame the Runners lead late in the set twice, but CSUB held on to win 25-23. Murdock led the third set with five kills and hit .714.
In the fourth set, the `Dogs started with 4-1 lead and never trailed in the final set of the match. CSUB closed in on the Bulldogs lead trailing 5-4, but Fresno State answered with 10-3 run for a seven point advantage. The Bulldogs held on to their lead winning the final set 25-18. Wild recorded nine kills in the fourth set. Junior Megan Callahan added four blocks.
The `Dogs answered by winning the fourth set to win the match earning their 14th match of the season. Fresno State faces New Mexico on Oct. 27 in Albuquerque, N.M.
