COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State junior middle blocker Maci Murdock confirmed her place among the conference's top players with a spot on the Mountain West Global Challenge All-Star Volleyball Team unveiled Tuesday.
The Turlock, Calif,. native and the 12-person squad is slated to compete in the 2014 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia on July 13-18. Also slated to play are Junior National Teams from Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia, as well as club teams from Italy, Serbia, Austria and Romania.
Before the event, the squad will spend two days of training in Venice, Italy, then will participate in two more days of friendly matches.
"The All-Star Challenge will provide a great experience and opportunity to grow for our student athletes," Fresno State head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said, "and it's also fantastic exposure for our conference. Maci's been a three-year starter and an integral part of our offense since her freshman year. She's grown so much as a player and young woman in the last year, and this trip will help prepare her for a strong senior year where she will be looked to for leadership. I have no doubt she'll come back a better player and stronger young woman."
The Mountain West All-Star Team includes two setters, one libero, four middle blockers and five outside hitters from eight of the 11 MW member institutions.
Last fall, Murdock ranked first for the `Dogs, eighth in the MW and 70th nationally with a .350 hitting mark (a total that also ranked third in school history). She also paced the squad in blocks per set (0.90 p/s), and ended the fall ranked top-10 all-time for the program in career hitting (first, .329), block assists (eighth, 264) and total blocks (ninth, 291). A starter in all 32 matches, she led the team in blocks in a team-best 17 matches, and topped the team in hitting in 15 contests.
Bring It Promotions is managing the trip and has been running the Global Challenge tournament for 10 years, and coordinated overseas university tours since 1997.
Leading the trip will be San Diego State head coach and 2012 MW Coach of the Year Deitre Collins-Parker, and New Mexico assistant coach JJ Glavan.
Closer to home this spring, Murdock and the `Dogs have two more weekends of action in the spring exhibition slate with events at San Jose State, Saturday, April 26, and at home on Saturday, May 3 at North Gym.
