Gera Works Hard On and Off the Court
June 8, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - Lisa Gera, a senior libero/setter for the Bulldogs from San Jose, Calif., is known for her record breaking aces and digs, but she excels off the court as well. A sports marketing major, Dean's List recipient and Fresno State Scholar-Athlete, Gera works hard to maintain her 3.0 GPA.
"Going to college isn't always about your scores it's about what you take from it and the experience you gain," said Gera, "I take academics seriously not for the GPA but because I am learning. College isn't about getting the grade or a degree it's about getting an education."
Since becoming a Bulldog in 2005, Gera has shown her drive both on the court and in classroom. Along with sister, Lacey, who is also a Fresno State Scholar-Athlete, Gera has shown her talent not only as an athlete but also a student. Her newest venture has been to sign on with the Fresno State athletics marketing team as an intern for the summer.
"Fresno State is constantly making sure student-athletes have a great experience, so when I was presented with the opportunity to work in marketing, specifically sports, I took it," Gera said.
As an intern within the marketing department, Gera is working on upcoming deadlines for the fall sports, such as promotions and planning events for different teams.
Gera, who would like to one day work for a professional basketball team or at the collegiate level, sees the importance in internships and gaining real-world experiences,
"While academics are important it is remembering that I am here to learn and gain from this experience to help me in the future that helps me keep my grades up."
Gera will join the Bulldogs in kicking off the 2009 season at the Fresno State Invitational on August 28 against Cal State Bakersfield at the Save Mart Center.
