FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head volleyball coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell announced the 2013 schedule on Monday morning. The Bulldogs are set to face six teams that competed in last year's NCAA Tournament, which included two teams that were ranked in AVCA's final 2012 poll.
"As usual we put together a balanced schedule to help our RPI rankings," Netherby-Sewell said. "We want as many MW schools in the NCAA Tournament as possible. It'll be great preparation for our very balanced conference play."
In 2013, the `Dogs host two tournaments in the Save Mart Center. The Bulldog Invitational kicks off the season, Aug. 30-31. The Bulldogs host Rice, CSU Northridge and Santa Clara in the season opening tournament. Santa Clara is the first of six teams the `Dogs face, who participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Fresno State heads north to compete in the Nike Invitational hosted by the University of Portland. The Bulldogs face the Pilots and BYU, Sept. 6-7. The Cougars finished the 2012 season ranked No. 12 in the country.
Next, the Bulldogs return to the Save Mart Center for the Fresno State Classic, Sept. 13-14. The `Dogs play CSU Bakersfield, Belmont and Oregon. Both Belmont and Oregon competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago and the Ducks ended the season as the No. 2 program in the country.
"Last season we were pretty tough, poised and consistent in front of our home crowd," said Netherby-Sewell of the home slate. "The doghouse has become ours, so I wanted as many teams to have to face us in the Save Mart Center this season as possible. It's good for our five seniors, too. They've earned the time in front of their family, friends, fans and peers."
The final nonconference tournament for the Bulldogs is the UC Irvine Invitational Sept. 20-21.
Fresno State faces UC Irvine, Xavier and American University before opening its second year in the Mountain West.
The Bulldogs open the 2013 MW slate with Utah State and Boise State on Sept. 26 and 28. The `Dogs will face each member of the MW twice this season, which added Utah State and San Jose State. Defending MW co-champions San Diego State comes to town on Nov. 9 and Colorado State on Nov. 23.
"I'm pumped for this season," Netherby-Sewell said. "I can't wait to see this team, which has so much resolve, go for it. It should be fun!"
Fresno State kicks off the 2013 season on Aug. 24 with the annual alumni match at 1:00 p.m.
