Volleyball's Christy Burnett and Java Johnson Land Preseason All-WAC Honors

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State had two seniors named to the 2002 Preseason Western Athletic Conference Team in outside hitter Christy Burnett (Fallbrook, Calif.) and middle blocker Java Johnson (Fresno, Calif.).
Selected by the league's 10 coaches, Burnett and Johnson picked up their first WAC preseason honors after being named to the 12-member team, which was half comprised of seniors.
Having ranked among the WAC's top ten in digs last season, Burnett also appeared in the league's top ten in hitting, kills per game and service aces. The 2001 second team all-WAC performer started all 24 matches. Burnett led all Bulldogs with nine double-doubles and returns as the team's top offensive (231 kills, 2.69 kpg) and defensive (297 digs, 3.45 dpg) leader.
Johnson, who helped to the Bulldogs to national notoriety in blocking last season as the team finished 21st in the final release of the NCAA stats, will be the force at the net for the 'Dogs. Finishing second on the team in total blocks (98, 1.27 bpg) in 2001, Johnson had at least one block in every match but three and played in all 24 matches.
Fresno State opens its 2002 season on the road in Williamsburg, Va., Aug. 30-31, when the Bulldogs participate in the William & Mary Tournament. The 'Dogs open play against Furman, East Carolina, Radford and host William & Mary.
Fresno State has announced its television package for volleyball this season. Six matches will be broadcast live by AT&T Broadband - The Home Team (channel 14). The six dates are as follows:
Sept. 20 vs. University of San Diego
Sept. 21 vs. UNLV
Oct. 11 vs. Louisiana Tech
Nov. 8 vs. San Jose State
Nov. 14 vs. Nevada
Nov. 15 vs. Hawai'i
Tickets for the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, which will be hosted by the University of Nevada in Reno, Nev., go on sale August 1. The tournament will be held on campus at Nevada's Virginia Street Gym, Nov. 22-24, as eight of the 10 teams will compete in the tournament
Ticket prices are $30 for adults and $15 for children and students for an all-session pass (seven matches). All seats are general admission and prices apply to all age groups. Mark your calendar for August 24 for plenty of "Meet the Team" activities. "Meet the Team" at Fashion Fair Mall will take place on Sat., Aug. 24, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Later in the afternoon, Fresno State will host an Alumni Match at 4:00 p.m. in the North Gym. Following that match there will be a contest between local media personalities and alumni at 5:00 p.m. Finally, the Sideout Club, Fresno State's volleyball booster club, will host a social at 6:15 p.m.
