LEXINGTON, Ky. --- The Fresno State volleyball team earned its fourth-straight American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced Wednesday.
Fresno State was one of two Mountain West programs, along with Wyoming, to earn the team distinction that recognizes collegiate volleyball programs for maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average.
"At Fresno State, our culture is a fine one," Bulldogs' head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said. "Our student-athletes have a sense of pride, duty and appreciation for the education they are receiving. They are doing the work and I congratulate them on a job well done!"
The Bulldogs were one of five Division I programs from the state of California - joining the Pacific, Stanford, San Francisco and Saint Mary's College as honorees from the Golden State.
"On behalf of the team, I thank our academic support staff, my assistant coach and the professors who support our athletes as students," Netherby-Sewell said. "Many people put a lot of time and care into our mentoring programs and this award is a tribute to a big team of student-athletes, support staff and coaches."
In total, 130 NCAA Division I programs were honored with the 2012-13 Team Academic Award.
"Excellence doesn't happen by accident, either on the court or in the classroom," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It takes consistent preparation, relentless effort, and determined leadership. A full year of academic achievement, by an entire team of individual students, is a remarkable achievement. What better way to start a new season than with a celebration of an award so emblematic of all that is necessary for sustained success."
The honor by the AVCA is just the latest academic achievement for Fresno State - who recently had its first CoSIDA Academic All-American in Cecilia Agraz in 2011 and has also had multiple first-team Academic All-District honorees during Netherby-Sewell's tenure.
Fresno State reports for fall camp on Friday and opens the 2013 season on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. versus Rice in the first match of the 2013 Bulldog Invitational.
