Practice Begins for Fresno State Volleyball
Aug. 11, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - Preparation for the 2008 volleyball season is underway across the country and the Fresno State Bulldogs began on Friday with two-a-day practices that continue until school starts on Aug. 25. The Bulldogs will have three full weeks of practice before opening the season hosting the Fresno State Invitational Aug. 29-30 at the Save Mart Center.
In its first year under head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell, Fresno State looks to improve upon its 2007 record, and while there are no seniors on this years team, they do have five juniors and five sophomores, who all saw a lot of court time as freshman. Joining them are the two newcomers, local Buchanan high graduates Baylee Platt and Brianna Clarke.
"Our starting day was highly anticipated," said Netherby-Sewell. "Everyone was eager to get in and anxious to see what we have and how new it's going to be. The team wasn't really knowing what to expect but I've been pleased to say the least with how it's gone so far."
The Bulldogs spend most of their practice time in the North Gym and for the second-straight complete year will play all of their matches in the Save Mart Center. This year however, the set up in the Save Mart Center will have a new intimate feel that seats approximately 2,700 fans.
"We have a new mission this year and that is for pre-season is to `give maximum effort daily," Netherby-Sewell added. "We then have little goals under that on little things that they can do to get that 100-percent everyday and they have been doing that. They have done everything we have asked them to. I couldn't be happier. We have a long way to go but we are going to see some rewards this year."
