FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's volleyball team served up fun and entertainment as the Bulldogs beat their alumni in three sets.
Fresno State volleyball fans were treated to great volleyball from student-athletes past and present. Fans also saw a lighter more entertaining side to the `Dogs, who wrap up fall camp this weekend.
"The funny part was it was hard to get my team to let loose and have fun in this environment," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "I thought it was a good opportunity to bring fun and excitement into the venue, while still trying to play good volleyball. It ended up being a challenge for them, but everyone had a great time."
The Bulldogs not on the court ran through the stands giving high fives after big plays by their teammates on the court. The current team also performed cartwheels, cheerleading stunts and cheers.
Junior Lauren Albertson showed off her skills on the court as well as being the official and public address announcer.
"It was a really fun day and it was a side of our team we got to explore and share with our fans," said Albertson. "It was a great atmosphere to have fun and prepare us for the upcoming season."
Sophomore Maci Murdock opened the first set against the Alumni with a kill that put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Lauren Albertson broke a 2-2 tie with a huge kill. The Alumni battled back and took the lead in the first set. Former Bulldogs Lacy Gera slammed down a kill giving the Alumni an 8-5 lead.
After a time out called by Netherby-Sewell the current Bulldogs came out fired up and rallied to take back the lead in the first set after overcoming a four-point deficit.
The current `Dogs took the first set by a score of 25-18.
Early in the second set, the Alumni took an 8-4 lead before the `Dogs took the lead and never looked back. Barbara Alcantara recorded a block that brought the `Dogs within one. The Bulldogs pulled ahead 13-10 forcing the Alumni to call a timeout to regroup and come up with a different game plan.
Former Bulldog Lauren Berger recorded a kill to the middle of the court brought the alumni within five in the second set. The current 'Dogs won the second set 25-15.
The third set started out evenly matched, but behind Christina Lee's serving the Bulldogs pulled ahead 12-6. The alumni rallied to put them back in the set. Berger tipped the ball over the front row for the kill and tied the set up 13-13.
The final set stayed close and fun antics escalated by Bulldogs past and present. Kristen Sciacca got the crowd involved with a wave. Then between her serves former Bulldog Meghan Moss did her famous Irish jig.
The longest rally of the match was late in the third set both sides came up with huge digs, but it was freshman Zana Bowens who got the kill and point for the current `Dogs. Although the third set was the closest, the current Bulldogs came out on top 25-23.
The Bulldogs had so much fun playing that they played a fourth set. The Bulldog alumni that played were Jennifer McArtor, Leslie Malady-Lopes, Lacey Gera, Lauren Berger, Tiffany Bishop, Lynette Wilke Lopez, Robyn Keune, Lisa Gera, Meghan Moss, Kelly Mason, Kasey Galbraith, Annie Schultz, Melanie Spigelmyre and Kelly Leonardo.
"Today's alumni match was really fun," said former Bulldog Kelly Mason. " Playing with the girls most recent to the 1980's was a really cool experience. I am excited to see our alumni group continue to grow and it was fun to team up to play the current team."
