Mountain West Volleyball Notes
FRESNO, Calif. -
For the first time since 2007, the Fresno State volleyball team opens the season on the road. The Bulldogs kick off the 2012 season at the El Paso Sport Commission Invite hosted by UTEP.
The two day tournament runs from Aug. 24-25 and includes, Fresno State, UTEP, Arizona State and Idaho State. The `Dogs have faced all three teams in past seasons.
`Dogs Led by Veteran Squad in 2012
The Fresno State volleyball team heads into its first season as a member of the Mountain West Conference with a veteran squad returning 12 members from the 2011 team. The Bulldogs add only one freshman to the roster for the 2012 season.
Fresno State vs. UTEP
The Bulldogs and Miners meet for the 19th time in program history. The 'Dogs lead the overall series 16-2. The last meeting was in 2004 and UTEP won in three straight sets 3-0. Fresno State and UTEP previously met twice a year, when both teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
Scouting the Miners
UTEP finished the 2011 season with an overall mark of 19-14 and 9-11 in conference play. The Miners return four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's ninth place team. UTEP welcomes two newcomers to the 2012 squad. Xitlati Herrera returns for the Miners and last season, she led the team with 3.23 kills and 1.11 blocks per set.
Fresno State vs. Arizona State
The Bulldogs and Sun Devils meet for the fourth time in program history. ASU leads the overall series 0-3. The last meeting was in 2002 and Arizona State won 3-1.
Scouting the Sun Devils
Arizona State ended its 2011 campaign with an overall record of 9-22 and a conference mark of 5-17. The Sun Devils return eight starters and 12 letterwinners from last season. ASU also welcomes four newcomers to the squad. Erica Wilson recorded 2.37 kills and 0.73 blocks per set last season.
Fresno State vs. Idaho State
The Bulldogs and Bengals square off for the sixth time in program history. The 'Dogs lead the overall series 3-2. The last meeting was in 2007 and Idaho State won the match, 3-1.
Scouting the Bengals
Idaho State finished the 2011 season with a 14-14 record and 7-9 mark in conference play. The Bengals have five starters and nine letterwinners returning in 2012. ISU also welcomes three newcomers to the squad. Breanne Van Every recorded 3.39 kills per set and 2.42 digs per set in 2012.
'Dogs Picked to Finish Fourth in Mountain West
The Bulldogs were selected to finish in fourth place in their first season in the Mountain West Conference. The voting panel consisted of all nine MW head volleyball coaches. Colorado State was favored to win the conference crown with eight of nine first place votes and a total of 80 points.
Agraz Nominated for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Bulldog senior Cecilia Agraz was nominated for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for her exceptional work ethic and contributions to the team throughout her Fresno State career. The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award celebrates the loyalty of seniors that honor a four-year commitment to their university. The honor recognizes these student-athletes for great achievement during competition and in their community while staying in school.
