FRESNO, Calif.--The Fresno State volleyball team hosts the third annual Fresno State Classic in the Save Mart Center Sept. 7-8. Sacramento State, UC Davis and Utah Valley are slated to compete in the non-conference tournament. It is the first home matches of the season for the Bulldogs, who open the tournament on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. against Sacramento State.
Fresno State vs. Sacramento State
The Bulldogs and Hornets meet for the 29th time. The `Dogs lead the series 18-10. It is the first meeting since 2010, which the Aggies won the match in three sets.
Scouting the Hornets
Sacramento State is 3-3 on the young season. The Hornets hosted a tournament last weekend and went 2-1 finishing in second place. Jessie Genger leads the team with 4.5 kills and 2.5 digs per set. Olivia Moss has a team-high 1.5 blocks per set.
Fresno State vs. UC Davis
The Bulldogs and Aggies meet for the 15th time in program history. The `Dogs lead the series 8-6. The last meeting between the two schools was in 2010 and the Aggies won in three sets.
Scouting the Aggies
UC Davis is 2-4 heading into the third week of the season. The Aggies went 0-3 last weekend facing Utah, North Carolina and Santa Clara. Allison Whitson leads the team with 3.1 kills2.5 digs per set. Victoria Lee has a team-high 25 blocks and is averaging 1.1 blocks per set.
Fresno State vs. Utah Valley
The Bulldogs and Wolverines meet for the second time in program history. Utah Valley leads the series 1-0 after beating the `Dogs last season in four sets.
Scouting the Wolverines
Utah Valley has a 2-3 mark in 2012. The Wolverines won a midweek match to Weber State. Lindsay Morrell is leading the team with 2.7 kills per set. Lauren Stringham is hitting a team-high .328 with 1.47 kills per set. Brookelyn Hall has recorded 10 aces averaging .6 per set.
Bulldogs Off to Strong Start
Fresno State is off and running in 2012 with a 4-2 record heading into the third week of the season. The Bulldogs are averaging 13.4 kills, 12.2 sets, 13.3 digs and 1.4 service aces per set as a team. The `Dogs offense has three individuals hitting over .300.
Fresno State Leading the Pack
After the second week of the season, the Bulldogs are among the top 5 in several statistical categories. Senior Barbara Alcantara leads the conference with 11.2 assists per set. She has a total of 236 assists on the season. Junior Korrin Wild second in the conference with .52 aces per set, a total of 11 on the year. Freshman Zana Bowens is seventh with .37 aces per set and a total of seven service aces. Sophomore Maci Murdock is fifth in blocks with 1.3 per set. Redshirt junior Marissa Brand is second in kills per set with 4.1 per set.
Murdock and Brand Earn All-Tournament Honors
Sophomore Maci Murdock and redshirt junior Marissa Brand earned all-tournament honors at the Omni Hotels Colorado Classic. Murdock averaged 2.3 kills and 1.2 blocks per set. Brand averaged 4.4 kills and 3.2 digs per set. The previous week Murdock and Korrin Wild earned all-tournament honors at the UTEP Tournament.
