    FRESNO, Calif. - For the second-straight year, redshirt junior outside hitter Marissa Brand has earned Academic All-District honors. Brand was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 8 first team, which makes her now eligible for Academic All-America honors on Thursday afternoon.

    "Marissa is one of the most determined student-athletes I know," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "She's been an awesome Bulldog and continues to help us build. I'm proud of her award."

    A criminology major focusing on forensic science and a psychology minor, Brand excels both on the court leading the `Dogs offense and in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA. She leads the team with 3.5 kills per set and 329 kills on the season.

    The Cypress, Calif. native, tallied 12 double-double's on the year and recorded a career best 25 kills against Wyoming on Oct. 13, 2012. Brand hit a season best .333 against Air Force to start MW play. She is a two-time conference all-academic award winner.

    This season, Brand is averaging 2.8 digs per set and has 10 service aces in 94 sets played. The second year captain becomes just the second Bulldog volleyball player to be eligible for Academic All-America honors. Fellow teammate Cecilia Agraz was named the Bulldogs first Academic All-American in 2011. Last season, Brand earned second team Academic All-District honors.
