FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State put on a Halloween night show at Valley Children's Stadium, using a full team-effort to power past Oregon State 38-22 on Saturday night. The Bulldogs scored 17 points in the third quarter to build a 22-point lead and secure their fifth win of the season.
Fresno State (5-3, 2-2 Pac-12) totaled 392 yards of offense, including 190 on the ground and 202 through the air. Jayden Mandal completed 11-of-17 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. Bryson Donelson led the ground attack with 108 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, while Josiah Freeman hauled in six receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Bulldogs recorded five sacks and forced two turnovers. Tytus Khajavi led Fresno State with eight tackles, while Dylan Hampsten added seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.
How it Happened
Oregon State (5-3, 3-1 Pac-12) threatened early after intercepting Mandal on Fresno State's opening possession. The Beavers advanced to the Bulldogs' 4-yard line, but Fresno State's defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs to keep Oregon State off the board.
The Beavers eventually opened the scoring with a 54-yard field goal from Caleb Ojeda at the 6:41 mark of the first quarter.
Fresno State answered with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take its first lead. Mandal capped the possession with a 15-yard touchdown run, putting the Bulldogs ahead 7-3 with 1:47 remaining in the opening quarter.
Oregon State pulled within one early in the second quarter on a 28-yard field goal from Ojeda, cutting Fresno State's advantage to 7-6.
The Bulldogs responded just 45 seconds later. After a 12-yard run from Rayshon Luke, Donelson broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run, extending Fresno State's lead to 14-6 with 11:10 remaining in the half.
Oregon State put together a 14-play, 64-yard drive on its next possession but was held to another field goal. Ojeda connected from 29 yards out to make it a 14-9 game midway through the second quarter.
Fresno State answered with a seven-play, 53-yard scoring drive. Mandal connected with Freeman for a 26-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bulldogs a 21-9 advantage with 1:54 remaining before halftime.
The Beavers threatened to cut into the deficit before the break, advancing to the Fresno State 17-yard line, but the Bulldogs recovered a fumble with 12 seconds remaining to preserve their 12-point lead heading into the locker room.
Fresno State carried its momentum into the second half. After forcing an Oregon State punt on the opening possession, the Bulldogs moved 52 yards in six plays to set up a 30-yard field goal from Manaki Watanabe, extending their lead to 24-9 with 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs' defense created another opportunity moments later. Oregon State fumbled on its first play of the ensuing possession, and Fresno State recovered at the Beavers' 19-yard line. The Bulldogs capitalized on the short field with a five-play drive, capped by Mandal's 3-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 31-9 with 7:37 left in the quarter.
Oregon State responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive, finishing with a 5-yard touchdown run from Cornell Hatcher Jr. to cut Fresno State's lead to 31-16.
The Bulldogs answered with another touchdown of their own. Fresno State marched 76 yards in six plays before Mandal found Freeman for a 31-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bulldogs their largest lead of the night at 38-16 with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Fresno State's defense continued to make stops in the fourth quarter, forcing turnovers on downs on consecutive Oregon State possessions to maintain its comfortable advantage.
The Beavers added a late touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Braden Atkinson to Eric Olsen with 1:45 remaining, but Fresno State recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock to seal the 38-22 victory.
