Despite matching the single-game Mountain West Tournament record for home runs with five and slugging 12 extra-base hits, the Fresno State baseball team was unable to keep up with San Diego State as the 'Dogs fell 18-10 in the opening round of the MW Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.
Fresno State (32-24) pounded out 18 hits, including 12 for extra-bases, in the contest as five different Bulldogs had multi-hit games. The 'Dogs smacked six doubles, one triple and came within one home run of matching the single-game program record smashing five home runs in the contest.
Leading the way for the 'Dogs was second-team All-MW selection senior second baseman Scott Silva who set a career-high with five hits, including a double and a home run and drove in a pair of RBIs. Fellow senior Jake Stone, also a second-team All-MW selection, was a single shy of the cycle tallying a double, triple and a home run and added three RBIs.
Junior shortstop Korby Batesole added three hits as he was a triple shy of the cycle finishing with a single, double and a home run and scored three runs.
San Diego State (39-18) matched the 'Dogs with 18 hits of their own with six going for extra-bases as the Aztecs had three doubles and three home runs. All nine starters had at least one hit as right fielder David Hensley and first baseman Jordan Verdon each had three hits apiece.
Scoring in the first inning for the 28th time this season, the 'Dogs wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard as leadoff hitter, senior outfielder Austin Guibor, went yard on the third pitch of the game sending his fourth home run of the season to right field. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda, a first-team All-MW selection, followed with his 14th double of the season and was driven home by Silva who pounded his 19th double of the season to right field.
One of the top offenses in the country, San Diego State pounded the 'Dogs starter Ricky Tyler Thomas for seven hits and 10 runs in the first inning as the two-time First-Team All-MW pitcher was unable to record an out. Senior right-hander Dominic Topoozian came to pick up three outs as the Clovis native worked 4.2 innings of relief of Thomas.
With San Diego State leading 10-2 after one inning, the 'Dogs continued to pound away at the Aztec lead getting one run back in the top of the second on a groundout to second by senior outfielder Ryan Dobson to score Batesole before adding three solo home runs in the third inning by Silva, Mountain West Freshman of the Year catcher Carter Bins and Batesole to make it 10-6.
The Aztecs added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 13-6 scoring on an RBI double by designated hitter Andrew Martinez followed by a two-run home run to right-center by Verdon.Â
The 'Dogs continued to chip away at the SDSU lead adding three runs in the top of the fifth as Dobson added his second RBI of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly scoring Bins before Stone cranked his ninth home run of the season to right-center to make it 13-9.
SDSU tacked on four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 17-9 lead, including three that were unearned after a Bulldog fielding error with two outs allowed the Aztecs to extend the inning.
The Aztecs added a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth by Adkison to take a 18-9 lead before the 'Dogs made the final score 18-10 on a triple to center field by Stone, his second of the season, drove in Guibor
The Bulldogs fall to the loser's bracket where they will face the loser of Thursday's second game between top-seeded New Mexico and fourth-seed Nevada on Friday in an elimination game at 2:00 p.m. PT.
